Berbick competed from 1976 to 2000. He was a strong puncher who moved well and had the potential to be a lasting force in the heavyweight division before Tyson's emergence on the world scene.
He won the WBC heavyweight title in 1986 by defeating Pinklon Thomas, but lost it in his first defense later that year to Mike Tyson, who was then undefeated at 20 years old. Berbick was also the last boxer to fight Muhammad Ali, defeating him in 1981.
