Hide's explosive style saw him knock out all but two of his opponents while his willingness to meet dangerous fighters head-on has also been cause for one or two dramatic defeats. Herbie's combative style has earned him the nickname of the 'Dancing Destroyer'.
Hide won the WBO (World Boxing Organisation) heavyweight title for the first time in 1994, beating American Michael Bentt, but lost it to another American, Riddick Bowe, the following year.
He regained the title in 1997 fighting Tony Tucker and made two successful defences before losing to Vitali Klitschko in 1999.
Herbie Hide made as many headlines for events outside of the ring as in it during more than 20 years in the spotlight.
